Let’s Start with Your WHY

Many clients tell me they want to move to New Zealand “to get a job and earn more money.” But here’s the truth: most of them already have stable jobs and income back home. They’re ready to invest thousands of New Zealand dollars to study here so clearly, it’s not just about the paycheck.

So what is it really about?

Here are 10 real reasons my clients have shared in their own words:

  • “Because New Zealand is a peaceful country.”

  • “For future benefits of my kids.”

  • “To complete my higher education and support my children’s education.”

  • “Because of its high-quality education system and globally recognized qualifications.”

  • “To enhance my professional background.”

  • “I want a master’s degree from a well-reputed country like New Zealand.”

  • “New Zealand offers better work-life balance than Sri Lanka.”

  • “It’s a leading country for study.”

  • “For a better future and peaceful environment.”

  • “More job opportunities, good pay, cost of living is not that high as compared to other countries, peace loving country..”

You can see that the motivation is not just about finding work. It is the little things. It ALWAYS is. Instead, they’re motivated by things like:

  • A safe and peaceful lifestyle

  • Globally respected education

  • Better work-life balance

  • Opportunities for their children

  • A less competitive, more welcoming environment

Your WHY Checklist

It’s important to understand your WHY before you begin your journey to New Zealand. This journey will be long, complex, and sometimes challenging. But if your reason is strong and meaningful, it will become your survival mantra the thing that keeps you going when things get tough.

Ask yourself the following questions and write down your responses, you will know when you are ready!

I want to move to New Zealand because…

Step 1: Take a piece of paper and write down every reason that comes to your mind for wanting to move to New Zealand. Don’t filter just write. Set a timer for 10 minutes and let your thoughts flow.

Step 2: Once you’re done, group similar ideas together. Use a highlighter to mark any repeated themes or patterns. You’ll start to see what truly matters to you.

Step 3: Want to make it more fun? Do this activity with your partner or a close friend. Compare notes. You’ll learn something new about yourself.
