Flying to NZ first time AND economy class? You need this survival hack!
Flying to New Zealand for the First Time? Avoid This Layover Mistake!
If you're an international student flying to New Zealand for the first time especially from India or Sri Lanka this blog post is for you. I’m Jinny, and I want to share a travel hack that could save you from a very uncomfortable night at the airport.
✈️ The Route: Colombo to Wellington
Most students flying from South Asia to New Zealand might need to take three flights. A common route is for example
1. Colombo to Singapore
2. Singapore to Auckland
3. Auckland to Wellington
✅ The Hack: Choose a Longer Layover in Singapore, Not Auckland
When booking your flights, always look for this combination:
Why? Because Changi Airport in Singapore is one of the best airports in the world for long layovers. You’ll find:
🛌 Sleep pods
🧖♀️ Showers
🍜 24/7 food courts
🧘♀️ Quiet zones
It’s the perfect place to rest and recharge before your long-haul flight to New Zealand begins.
❌ The Mistake I Made: Longer Layover in Auckland
I made the mistake of choosing a longer layover in Auckland, thinking I’d rest before my domestic flight to Queenstown. But here’s what happened:
I arrived in Auckland in the middle of the night
Everything was closed
I ended up sleeping on the floor until my morning flight
What I didn’t know is that domestic flights in New Zealand don’t operate 24/7. They usually run during specific hours of the day, so a long overnight layover can leave you stranded in a closed terminal.
🧠 Final Tips for First-Time Flyers
✅ Choose a longer layover in Singapore
✅ Check the operating hours of domestic flights in New Zealand
✅ Pack a travel survival kit in case you are stranded like me!
When you arrive in New Zealand, you want to feel fresh, relaxed and ready to start you first day!
