International students, build your team.
Why Having a Support Team Matters
Moving overseas is a major investment and it can cost even more if something goes wrong. Having a team of professionals on your side can save you time, money, and stress. Before making any long term commitments, it’s important to find an experienced education agent who can walk with you every step of the way. Your support crew may also include:
A licensed immigration adviser or immigration lawyer
and your international student manager.
Each team member has a clear role in helping you succeed. That’s why it's important to build a trusted support team to guide you through the process before you make any major commitments. Let’s break them down for you below:
Education Consultant
Your education consultant might otherwise be known as education agent, student advisor or education advisor. They will be one of the most important people in your life as you plan your move to New Zealand, so choose wisely. A good education consultant will help you:
Based on your goals and achievements, they can present a variety of study options, courses, and qualifications across different education providers.
They’ll help you decide if New Zealand is the right fit for you.
From applying to institutions of your choice to helping with visa applications. They ensure the right documents and evidence are provided.
Other services including translation services, advice on accommodation, pre-departure orientation. In many cases, they can provide post arrival assistance too, if they are based in New Zealand.
Finding the right education agent is one of the most important steps you’ll take.
Immigration Advice: Who Can Help You Legally?
In New Zealand, only licensed immigration advisers or practicing lawyers are allowed to give immigration advice. Here’s the difference:
Licensed Immigration Advisers complete a training course covering New Zealand immigration law, visa requirements, compliance, and client management. They are well-equipped to assist with most standard visa applications. Advisers are great for straightforward applications.
Immigration Lawyers hold a law degree (typically four years) and a Practicing Certificate. Lawyers have a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s legal system and can assist in complex and unusual immigration cases, offering strategic legal advocacy. Lawyers are qualified to represent you in court should an escalation happen.
Depending on your situation, you may need either a licensed immigration adviser for standard applications or an immigration lawyer for more complex cases.
International Student Manager
The international student manager ensures that your application has met the requirements under the code of practise. They oversee and manage enrollment and orientation for international students. They work with your educational consultant and co-ordinate activities. They often become the go-to people during the first few weeks of starting out your course. They are the point of contact for international students on matters such as student welfare, academic progress and connecting you with the right people within your college/university.
